Overview

Perge is one of the most important archaeological sites of the Pamphylia region, located 15 kilometers east of Antalya. The city was a major center for Hellenistic and Roman architecture, founded around 1000 BC. Its distinctive layout features a monumental colonnaded street with a water channel running down the center, which supplied the city's fountains and baths. The site includes a remarkably preserved Hellenistic gate with two imposing circular towers. The theater, built into the hillside, maintains much of its original seating and intricate marble stage wall decorations. A vast Roman bath complex remains, demonstrating advanced heating systems and plumbing infrastructure. The city was a significant center for early Christianity, visited by Saint Paul during his first missionary journey. Excavations have unearthed a vast collection of statues, many of which are housed in the Antalya Museum. The site spans a large area, preserving the remains of the agora, palaestra, and a 12,000-seat stadium.

Insider tips

Bring a wide-brimmed hat and high-SPF sunscreen, as the site offers almost no shade along the main colonnaded streets.

Wear sturdy, closed-toe walking shoes to navigate the uneven, ancient stone paving and loose rubble.

Visit the site early in the day to beat the intense Mediterranean heat and large tour groups arriving from Antalya.

Bring your own water, as vending options are extremely limited once you walk past the entrance gates.

What to avoid

Attempting to cover the site during the peak midday sun in July or August without proper hydration.

Good to know

Open daily year-round, though some peripheral excavation zones may be closed during active restoration or archaeological study.

Etiquette

Respect all roped-off excavation areas; avoid sitting or climbing on fragile stone ruins and column fragments.
