The boardwalk covers 8 kilometers of the Paiva River's path through the Arouca Geopark.
The route passes near the site of the 516 Arouca bridge, one of the longest pedestrian suspension bridges in the world.
The construction was designed to protect the fragile biodiversity of the river valley from direct human foot traffic.
The area is home to the Paiva River, which is classified as one of the cleanest rivers in Europe.
Geological features along the path date back over 500 million years to the Cambrian and Ordovician periods.
The trail features significant elevation changes, with the Areinho side beginning with a major staircase ascent.
The Passadiços do Paiva is an 8-kilometer wooden walkway network winding through the Arouca Geopark along the banks of the Paiva River. The Areinho trailhead is one of two primary access points, characterized by a significant initial climb consisting of approximately 500 steps. The trail traverses a rugged landscape of river gorges, waterfalls, and steep cliffs designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark. The terrain is marked by geological formations, including quartzites and schist, and offers views of the river's turbulent rapids. Hikers encounter the Praia Fluvial do Areinho at the start, a popular river beach area. The path is almost exclusively composed of raised wooden stairs and platforms designed to minimize environmental impact on the protected ecosystem. The route concludes at the Espiunca trailhead, completing a linear path that requires either a return journey or pre-arranged transport. Wildlife viewing opportunities include Iberian water lizards and various bird species endemic to the river valley.

Bring significantly more water than you expect to drink, as there are no facilities along the middle sections of the trail.
Check your footwear for grip; the wooden slats can be slippery if damp and the staircases are demanding.
Book your entry permit online well in advance, as visitor numbers are strictly capped daily.
Do not underestimate the physical demand of the Areinho climb; it is not recommended for individuals with limited mobility or poor cardiovascular fitness.
Requires mandatory online booking for entry; trail may close during extreme weather or high fire-risk conditions.
Strictly pack-out all trash, remain on the wooden pathways to protect the flora, and do not remove geological samples.
