Overview

The Great Kangari trail is a 2.2-kilometer nature path located within the Great Kangari Nature Reserve, a protected area in Latvia. It features a wooden boardwalk that elevates visitors above the surrounding wetlands and moss-covered forest floor. The reserve is notable for being one of the largest kame field formations in the country, characterized by a series of steep hills and kettle depressions formed by glacial activity. A wooden observation tower at the trail's midpoint provides an elevated perspective over the surrounding peat bogs and bog lakes. The landscape is primarily composed of pine forests and sensitive wetland ecosystems. The trail is designed to minimize human impact on the protected bog habitat.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy, closed-toe footwear suitable for uneven wooden planks.

Bring insect repellent, as the bog environment attracts significant mosquito activity in warmer months.

Stay strictly on the designated boardwalk to protect the fragile moss and wetland ecosystem.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to hike off the wooden boardwalk, as the bog terrain is hazardous and environmentally sensitive.

Etiquette

No open fires, no picking of plants, and pets must be kept on a leash.
