Overview

Óház-kilátó is a wooden observation tower situated atop the 609-meter-high Óház-tető peak in the Kőszeg Mountains. The structure stands on the site of the medieval Óház castle, which served as the original fortified settlement for the town of Kőszeg. Archaeological excavations at the site revealed stone foundations of a 13th-century residential tower and a defensive curtain wall. The current tower, reconstructed in 1991, provides a panoramic view of the Kőszeg landscape, the surrounding Hungarian-Austrian border region, and the Pannonian Plain. Visitors can see the town of Kőszeg and the peaks of the Alps on clear days. The area is heavily forested and serves as a major node in the regional hiking trail network. It is designated as a protected cultural and natural heritage site within the Irottkő Nature Park.

Insider tips

Bring a pair of binoculars to identify distant landmarks in both Hungary and neighboring Austria.

Carry sufficient water, as there are no food or drink services at the summit.

Wear sturdy hiking boots, as the trails leading to the peak are steep and can be muddy after rainfall.

What to avoid

Attempting the ascent in extreme weather conditions, as the exposed wooden structure becomes slippery and the forest trails lose stability.
