Overview

The Mukri raba vaatetorn is a wooden observation tower situated within the Mukri bog, one of the oldest bogs in Estonia. The tower provides an elevated vantage point over a landscape formed approximately 7,000 to 8,000 years ago. Visitors access the tower via a 2.5-kilometer wooden boardwalk trail that traverses the peat moss and pool-heavy terrain. The bog features a small island at its center and several crystal-clear bog lakes suitable for seasonal swimming. The observation deck allows for a 360-degree view of the surrounding forested wetland and its unique flora. The area is part of the larger Mukri Landscape Reserve managed by the State Forest Management Centre (RMK). It is a protected area that preserves the specific hydrologic conditions of the raised bog.

Insider tips

Wear waterproof hiking boots, as the boardwalk can be slippery and surrounding paths may be muddy.

Bring mosquito repellent during the summer months, as the stagnant water in the bog attracts high volumes of insects.

Pack a swimsuit if visiting in summer, as the bog pools are popular for a unique, tannin-rich swimming experience.

What to avoid

Attempting to walk on the bog surface outside of the marked boardwalk, as the terrain is unstable and ecologically fragile.

Etiquette

Stay strictly on the wooden boardwalk to avoid damaging the sensitive bog ecosystem. Keep dogs on a leash.
