Overview

Vigoleno is a fortified medieval village perched on a ridge overlooking the Stirone valley in the province of Piacenza. It is recognized as one of the 'Borghi più belli d'Italia' (most beautiful villages of Italy). The primary defensive structure is the 10th-century castle, which features a massive keep with a double line of battlements. The village is surrounded by intact defensive walls that follow the contours of the limestone ridge. Within the walls lies the Romanesque Church of San Giorgio, dating back to the 12th century. The interior houses an 8th-century baptismal font and a stone relief depicting Saint George slaying the dragon. The village has maintained its medieval layout, characterized by narrow cobblestone alleys and defensive towers. It remains one of the few completely fortified villages in the Piacenza Apennines that has retained its original structural integrity.
