Overview

The Château de Saumur is a medieval fortress overlooking the confluence of the Loire and Thouet rivers in western France. Originally constructed in the 10th century, the site was significantly reconstructed in the late 14th century by Louis I of Anjou, who transformed it into a pleasure palace. The building served as a fortified residence, a state prison, and a weapons depot before being acquired by the city of Saumur in 1906. It now houses the municipal museum, featuring collections focused on the decorative arts and horse-related history. The structure is characterized by its white limestone facade, octagonal stair towers, and ornate machicolations. Visitors can access the ramparts and the church towers for panoramic views of the Saumur valley vineyards. The site is a registered Monument Historique of France.
