Interesting facts
1

The rock formations are composed of quartz conglomerate, a rare rock type in the region.

2

The park's unique microclimate allows for the growth of plant species typically found in much cooler, northern climates.

3

The crevices serve as natural air conditioners, often maintaining temperatures 10 to 15 degrees cooler than the surface.

4

The site was historically used by indigenous populations and later served as a tourist destination in the mid-1800s.

5

There are no naturally occurring underground caves; the caverns are formed by deep, narrow cracks in the rock mass.

Overview

Panama Rocks Scenic Park is a quarter-mile-long ridge featuring massive 60-foot-tall Paleozoic quartz conglomerate rock formations. The site consists of a complex network of crevices, passageways, and deep caverns carved by glacial meltwater during the last Ice Age. Located in Chautauqua County, the park offers a one-mile self-guided hiking trail that winds through these geological features. The forest floor is dominated by eastern hemlock trees, contributing to a microclimate that remains significantly cooler than the surrounding area. The site is a privately owned geological preserve that has been open to the public since the 19th century. Visitors explore the formations by navigating narrow moss-covered corridors and staircases built into the rock face. The rocks are composed of sedimentary material deposited approximately 300 million years ago.

Photo spot

The deepest crevice section, often referred to as 'The Hall of Rocks', offers the most dramatic vertical lighting and scale.

Insider tips

Wear hiking boots with good traction as the stone paths can be slippery due to moss and moisture.

Bring a light jacket even in summer, as the rock corridors maintain a distinct chill.

Use a headlamp or flashlight if you intend to explore the deeper crevices safely.

What to avoid

Do not attempt the hike in open-toed sandals or flip-flops due to uneven, slippery, and rocky terrain.

Good to know

Open seasonally from May through October; closed during the winter months due to hazardous icy conditions.

Etiquette

Stay on marked trails to protect the fragile moss and fern ecosystems; climbing on the rocks is prohibited.
