Overview

Wonderful Rocks, or 'Chudnite Skali', consist of a group of over ten limestone pillars reaching heights of 40 to 50 meters. The formations were created by the erosion of the Devnya River and the subsequent winds acting upon the soft sedimentary rock. The site is located directly on the western shore of the Tsonevo Reservoir, a large artificial lake in eastern Bulgaria. Three natural tunnels carved through the rock mass allow pedestrians to walk directly through the pillars. The geological structure is composed of limestone deposits dating back to the Eocene epoch. Because of their vertical orientation and porous structure, the rocks resemble a castle or fortress from a distance. The area serves as a habitat for various birds, including raptors that nest in the rock crevices.

Insider tips

Wear shoes with high-grip rubber soles, as the limestone surfaces can be slippery and uneven.

The most accessible tunnels are at the base; be prepared to crouch or duck in some segments.

Bring binoculars if you are interested in birdwatching, as the cliffs attract nesting birds of prey.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to swim in the reservoir near the rocks, as underwater currents and sharp submerged limestone debris are present.

Etiquette

Do not climb the unstable limestone walls to protect both the geological integrity of the site and your personal safety.
