Overview

The Kanuni Sultan Süleyman Bridge is an Ottoman-era stone bridge in Büyükçekmece, Istanbul, designed by the imperial architect Mimar Sinan and completed in 1567. It spans 635 meters across the neck where the Büyükçekmece Lake meets the Sea of Marmara, consisting of four spans and 28 arches. The structure was commissioned by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent to ensure the safe passage of the Ottoman army on their way to the Balkans. It features distinct basalt stonework and remains a landmark of 16th-century hydraulic and structural engineering. In 1986, the bridge was restored and pedestrianized, removing motorized traffic to preserve its integrity. It serves as a central feature of the Mimar Sinan district's cultural heritage.
