Overview

Castillo de Colomares is a monument dedicated to Christopher Columbus and his discovery of the Americas. Built between 1987 and 1994, the structure serves as a synthesis of Neo-Byzantine, Neo-Romanesque, Neo-Gothic, and Neo-Mudéjar architectural styles. The monument was constructed by Dr. Esteban Martín y Martín, a physician who designed it by hand with the help of two local masons over seven years. It covers approximately 1,500 square meters and is notable for featuring the smallest chapel in the world, certified by the Guinness World Records. The architecture incorporates various symbols representing the three ships used during the 1492 voyage: the Santa María, the Pinta, and the Niña. The walls are primarily constructed using bricks, concrete, and natural stone. It stands on the hillside of Benalmádena, offering panoramic views of the Mediterranean coastline. The monument functions as both a historical tribute and an architectural curiosity rather than a traditional castle.
