Samuel's Fortress is a prominent medieval fortification located on the highest point of Ohrid Hill, overlooking Lake Ohrid. It served as the capital and seat of Tsar Samuel during the First Bulgarian Empire in the 10th and 11th centuries. The structure features a perimeter of approximately 3 kilometers of defensive walls and multiple towers. Much of the current masonry dates to various reconstruction phases, most significantly a major restoration completed in 2003. Visitors can access the ramparts to walk along the top of the walls, which provide an aerial perspective of the Old Town and the lake. Archaeologists have identified layers of ancient Hellenistic and Roman fortifications beneath the medieval ruins. It remains one of the largest preserved citadels in North Macedonia.
