Overview

Tonogayato Garden is a designated Place of Scenic Beauty located on a Musashino Terrace cliff edge in Kokubunji. The park utilizes the natural topography to create a landscape that transitions from a grassy plateau to a valley floor containing a spring-fed pond. It was originally established as a private villa garden for Eguchi Teijo before becoming a residence for the Iwasaki family. The design features a stroll-style garden layout centered around the 'Jiro-ben' spring, which provides water for the pond. Dense bamboo thickets and Japanese maples define the valley, creating a microclimate cooler than the surrounding urban area. The grounds include a traditional teahouse that overlooks the water feature. The garden is maintained by the Tokyo Metropolitan Park Association.

Insider tips

Wear comfortable, flat walking shoes due to the steep stone stairs and uneven paths descending into the valley.

Use insect repellent during the summer months, as the damp, shaded valley environment attracts mosquitoes.

Visit the viewing platform near the entrance for an elevated perspective of the entire garden landscape.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to navigate the steep, narrow stone steps in wet weather, as they become slippery.

Good to know

Closed during the year-end and New Year holidays.

Etiquette

Stay on marked paths to preserve the delicate moss and cliff-side flora; refrain from picking plants.
