Interesting facts
1

The geological structure is technically known as a wave-cut platform or bench, formed by alternating layers of soft sandstone and hard mudstone.

2

The rhythmic appearance of the rocks is caused by the differential erosion rates of the two distinct sediment layers.

3

Geologists classify the rock strata as belonging to the Nichinan Group, dating back to the Neogene period.

4

The name 'Devil's Washboard' originated from local folklore suggesting the formations were used by oni (ogres/devils) for cleaning their clothes.

5

The site experiences a significant tidal range, exposing hundreds of meters of rock during the lowest tides of the lunar month.

Overview

Devil's Washboard, or Oni no Sentakuita, consists of extensive, striated sandstone and mudstone formations lining the Aoshima coastline in Miyazaki. These geological features were created by tectonic uplift and subsequent erosion by ocean waves, resulting in parallel grooves that resemble a laundry washboard. The formations span approximately 8 kilometers along the coast. During low tide, the rock shelf extends significantly, revealing shallow saltwater pools trapped in the crevices. These pools serve as micro-habitats for small crustaceans, mollusks, and various seaweeds. The site is a designated Natural Monument of Japan. It surrounds Aoshima Island, which is connected to the mainland by the Aoshima Bridge. The area is susceptible to tidal changes, which fundamentally alter the visibility and accessibility of the rocky shelf.

Insider tips

Check the local tide charts before visiting to ensure the tide is low enough to walk on the rock shelf.

Wear shoes with excellent grip, as the wet, moss-covered rocks are extremely slippery.

Bring a polarizing filter if using a camera to better capture the water-filled grooves.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to walk on the rocks if the tide is rising, as waves can quickly cover the path.

Etiquette

Do not remove any rocks, shells, or marine life from the tide pools.
