Tungabhadra Dam is a large multipurpose gravity dam constructed across the Tungabhadra River in the Hospet taluk of Vijayanagara district, Karnataka. Completed in 1953, the structure is built of rubble masonry and stands as one of the largest dams in Southern India. It serves as a vital irrigation source for the arid regions of North Karnataka and neighboring Andhra Pradesh, facilitating large-scale agriculture. The dam features an extensive reservoir, often referred to as Pampa Sagara, which has a storage capacity of approximately 133 thousand million cubic feet. The site includes the Tungabhadra Dam Gardens, located at the base, which are landscaped with fountains and seasonal flora. Water release from the 33 spillway gates is a major seasonal event, typically occurring during the monsoon period when the reservoir reaches full capacity. The dam complex also includes a small hydroelectric power station.
