Overview

The Castle of Biar is a 12th-century Almohad fortress perched on a rocky hill overlooking the town of Biar in the Alicante province. It is recognized as a National Monument, having been declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1931. The structure is characterized by its double defensive enclosure and a well-preserved 17-meter-high Almohad tower, known as the Torre del Homenaje. The lower level of this keep features an internal vault with original Almohad ribbing, a rare architectural detail of 12th-century Islamic military engineering. The castle played a pivotal role in the border defenses between the Kingdoms of Castile and Aragon during the Reconquista. It was finally captured by James I of Aragon in 1245 after a five-month siege. The current state reflects ongoing restoration efforts that have stabilized the original masonry and battlements. Visitors access the site via a steep path that circles the hill, providing panoramic views of the Vinalopó valley.

Insider tips

Bring water as there are no amenities inside the castle walls.

Use a hat and sunscreen, as the entire path and the upper battlements are completely exposed to the sun.

What to avoid

Do not attempt the walk in flip-flops or open-toed sandals due to the loose gravel on the ascent path.
