Interesting facts
1

The water's distinct blue color is caused by the extreme clarity of the river, which allows for minimal light scattering, highlighting the blue wavelengths.

2

The rock walls of the gorge contain evidence of ancient geological folding, showing how the tectonic plates of Shikoku were compressed.

3

The trail features a series of Seven Lucky Gods statues hidden among the natural rock formations.

4

The gorge's microclimate is significantly cooler than the surrounding valley floor due to the dense forest shade and constant water flow.

5

The rock formations are primarily made of crystalline schist, which reflects light differently than standard sedimentary rock.

Overview

Nakatsu Gorge is a geological site defined by the erosion of the Nakatsu River, which has exposed unique rock formations and deep, clear blue pools known as Niyodo Blue. A 2.3-kilometer round-trip walking path follows the riverbank, passing through narrow crevices and over constructed wooden boardwalks. The gorge is part of the Niyodogawa town landscape, carved into the crystalline schist mountains of Kochi Prefecture. Visitors encounter seven distinct waterfalls along the trail, the largest being the 20-meter Uryu-no-taki Waterfall. Massive rock faces, including the 'Dragon Wall,' tower above the trail, exhibiting geological folding patterns. The vegetation consists of dense, temperate forest that provides heavy canopy cover for most of the route. The water remains cool and transparent throughout the year, maintained by the high-altitude flow from the surrounding peaks. Signage along the path details the formation of the valley and its ecological significance.

Insider tips

Wear shoes with high-traction rubber soles as the wooden boardwalks and natural stones can become very slick when damp.

Bring a small towel for the humidity, as the gorge retains moisture even on dry summer days.

Stick strictly to the marked boardwalks to avoid damaging the delicate moss growth on the gorge walls.

What to avoid

Attempting to hike during heavy rainfall, as the gorge is prone to flash flooding and trail closures for safety.

Good to know

The trail may be closed periodically following heavy typhoon rain; verify local conditions at the town office prior to arrival.

Etiquette

No swimming or littering; carry out all trash to preserve the protected water quality.
