Overview

The Viceregal Lodge, officially known as Rashtrapati Niwas, served as the summer residence of the British Viceroy of India between 1888 and 1946. Designed by architect Henry Irwin in the Jacobethan style, the structure is constructed from light grey sandstone sourced from the local area. It was the site of the pivotal 1945 Shimla Conference regarding Indian self-government. Since 1965, the building has housed the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, a research center for humanities and social sciences. The interior features extensive Burmese teak paneling and historical artifacts from the British Raj era. Visitors may access the main entrance hall, the library, and specific exhibition rooms through guided tours. The site is situated on Observatory Hill, the second highest point in Shimla. The surrounding grounds include landscaped botanical gardens with rare Himalayan plant species.
