The tower stands on the border of the historical regions of Bohemia and the former Kingdom of Bavaria.
It is located directly above the Boubín primeval forest, a core zone of the Šumava National Park where trees reach ages of over 400 years.
The base of the tower is anchored into the granite bedrock that forms the peak of Mount Boubín.
The structure is a modular steel lattice mast with a wooden spiral staircase and observation deck.
Visibility is occasionally hindered by frequent temperature inversions common to the high altitude of the Šumava mountain range.
Boubín Lookout Tower is a 21-meter high steel structure situated at an elevation of 1,362 meters on the summit of Boubín mountain in the Šumava National Park. The tower provides a 360-degree panorama of the Bohemian Forest, the Bavarian Forest, and on clear days, the distant Alps. Built in 2004, the construction utilizes a combination of wooden cladding and a steel frame designed to withstand the harsh wind conditions of the high-altitude environment. It serves as a focal point for hikers navigating the extensive trail network of the Boubín primeval forest, which is one of the oldest protected areas in the Czech Republic. The structure is reached exclusively via marked hiking trails, as no motorized road access exists to the peak. It functions as a navigational landmark and meteorological vantage point for the surrounding region.
The top observation deck facing south for the best alignment toward the Alps.
Bring a windproof layer, as temperatures at the summit are significantly lower than in the surrounding valleys.
Carry sufficient water and supplies as there are no food or water kiosks at the summit.
Wear sturdy, broken-in hiking boots due to the rocky and uneven terrain on the final ascent.
Do not attempt the hike during thunderstorms, as the metal structure acts as a lightning rod on the exposed peak.
Accessible year-round, though upper stairs may be periodically restricted due to heavy icing or snow accumulation in winter.
Maintain silence to respect the protected status of the surrounding primeval forest; carry out all trash.
