Overview

Karaca Cave is a multi-chambered limestone cavern situated at an altitude of 1,550 meters in the Gümüşhane province of Turkey. The cave system spans a total length of approximately 105 meters with an average interior height of 15 meters. It features diverse geological formations including stalactites, stalagmites, columns, cave flowers, and travertine pools. The interior is characterized by a high moisture content and a relatively stable ambient temperature throughout the year. The cave is divided into several distinct halls connected by narrow passages, showcasing iron and magnesium oxide mineral deposits that create vibrant color palettes. It was opened to the public for tourism in 1996 following geological surveys. The cave system is formed within dolomite limestone rocks.

Insider tips

Wear non-slip footwear as the ground inside the cave is perpetually damp and can be slippery.

Bring a light jacket as the cave temperature is significantly lower than the external mountain air.

Use a camera with a high ISO setting or a tripod to compensate for low-light conditions without using flash.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to touch or remove any mineral fragments, as the cave is a protected natural monument.

Etiquette

Do not touch the stalactites or stalagmites, as natural skin oils can halt their growth process.
