Overview

Yumigahama Beach is a 1.2-kilometer-long crescent-shaped coastline located on the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture. The beach is officially recognized as one of the 100 Best Beaches in Japan due to its clean water and white sand. It is sheltered by the Ose and Tarai capes, which minimize wave action and create calm, shallow swimming conditions. The area is backed by a dense grove of black pine trees providing natural shade along the upper shore. During the summer months, the beach is equipped with designated swimming zones and beach huts. It serves as a popular starting point for coastal hiking trails connecting to the Irozaki headland.

Insider tips

Bring water shoes to navigate the transition between the sandy beach and the occasionally rocky seafloor near the capes.

Make use of the public foot showers located near the main beach entrances before leaving.

Visit the pine grove area for cooler temperatures and shade during the peak afternoon hours.

What to avoid

Do not swim outside the designated net-enclosed zones, as currents can strengthen significantly near the rocky capes.

Good to know

Lifeguards and beach facilities are only operational during the official summer swimming season; off-season, the beach is unpatrolled.

Etiquette

Avoid bringing beach umbrellas or tents that obstruct lifeguard sightlines; do not remove sand or shells from the beach.
