Overview

Hindens Rev is a five-kilometer-long narrow moraine ridge that extends from the Kålland peninsula into the waters of Lake Vänern. This natural formation acts as a geological continuation of the Halleberg and Hunneberg mountains, created by the retreating inland ice approximately 10,000 years ago. The terrain consists primarily of shingle and pebbles, narrowing to only a few meters wide in certain sections. Vegetation varies from pine forests on the inner, wider parts to barren, wave-swept stones at the outer tip. The site is a protected nature reserve, serving as a critical habitat for various bird species and unique flora adapted to the rocky environment. Visitors walk along a trail that traverses the length of the spit, offering views of the surrounding Vänern archipelago. The water levels of the lake fluctuate, occasionally submerging lower parts of the path during high-water seasons.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy, closed-toe hiking shoes as the terrain is uneven, rocky, and can be unstable.

Check local weather reports before visiting, as high winds and storms frequently make the outer tip dangerous or inaccessible.

Bring binoculars to spot birdlife that frequent the surrounding waters and shoreline.

What to avoid

Attempting to walk to the very tip during high-water levels or strong winds, as waves can wash over the narrow ridge.

Etiquette

Stay on marked trails to protect sensitive shoreline vegetation; dogs must be kept on a leash due to wildlife protection.
