Interesting facts
1

The limestone formations were originally coral reefs at the bottom of a tropical ocean before being uplifted by tectonic movement.

2

Akiyoshido Cave features a climate-controlled internal temperature of approximately 17 degrees Celsius year-round.

3

The annual controlled burning of the plateau is a tradition dating back over 300 years to maintain the grasslands.

4

More than 400 limestone caves are located throughout the Akiyoshidai area.

5

The Golden Pillar, a massive stalactite within the cave system, is one of the largest of its kind in Japan.

Researchers have discovered fossils of extinct megafauna, including the Japanese rhinoceros, within the cave system.

Overview

Akiyoshidai is Japan's largest karst plateau, characterized by a vast expanse of limestone outcrops emerging from grass-covered hills. The site sits atop Akiyoshido, one of the largest and longest limestone caves in Asia. The plateau is designated as a Quasi-National Park and features extensive hiking trails winding through the rock formations. The limestone geology dates back approximately 300 million years to ancient coral reefs. The landscape undergoes a dramatic seasonal transformation, most notably during the annual 'yamayaki' controlled burn in early spring. Underground, Akiyoshido Cave contains a subterranean river and unique stalactite formations. The Karst Road is a scenic driving route that traverses the center of the plateau. The area serves as both a geological preserve and a recreational destination for nature walks.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy, non-slip footwear as limestone surfaces, both on the plateau and in the cave, can be uneven or slick.

Carry a light jacket if visiting the cave, as the temperature is significantly cooler than the surface, even in summer.

Plan to visit both the surface plateau and the underground cave, as they require separate entrance points.

What to avoid

Attempting to hike off-trail in the plateau grass, which can be dense and hides uneven limestone cavities.

Etiquette

Stay on marked trails to protect the fragile karst vegetation and geological formations; do not touch cave surfaces.
