Overview

Antakallo Falls, located in the San Mateo district of the Huarochiri province, is a prominent waterfall fed by glacial runoff from the surrounding Andes. The waterfall drops approximately 30 meters into a narrow canyon pool. Its geological setting features distinct volcanic rock formations characteristic of the Lima highlands. The site is a primary destination for hikers practicing high-altitude trekking in the vicinity of the Central Highway. Vegetation in the immediate vicinity is limited to high-altitude scrub and mosses due to the arid alpine climate. The falls are maintained as a natural attraction managed by the local community of San Mateo de Huanchor.

Insider tips

Bring a high-SPF sunscreen and wide-brimmed hat, as there is minimal shade on the trail.

Carry at least 1.5 liters of water per person to mitigate the effects of the high altitude.

Trek with a light windbreaker, as temperatures drop rapidly when moving into the canyon shadow.

What to avoid

Attempting the hike immediately upon arriving from sea level without prior acclimatization in Lima or the highlands.

Etiquette

Pack out all trash; maintain silence to minimize disturbance to local Andean birdlife.
