Overview

Khao Chi Chan features a 130-meter-tall Buddha image known as Phra Phuttha Maha Wachira Uttamopat Sasada, laser-etched into the face of a limestone mountain. The project was initiated in 1995 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of King Rama IX’s accession to the throne. The image was created using photogrammetry and laser technology to outline the design, followed by hand-carving by stone masons. The lines of the carving are filled with gold leaf. The site is surrounded by a landscaped garden area and a reflecting pond. It serves as a spiritual site and a testament to modern engineering combined with traditional craftsmanship. No structures are built on the cliff face itself, preserving the natural mountain formation. The site is situated within the Sattahip District of Chon Buri province.

Photo spot

The edge of the reflecting pond in the front garden provides the best angle for capturing the entire cliff face with its reflection.

Insider tips

Visit during the early morning to avoid the intense midday sun and heat reflected off the limestone cliff.

What to avoid

Avoid walking directly on the landscaped flower beds or attempting to climb the rock face. Do not litter in the garden areas.
