The structure consists of a distinct cap of harder rock that shields the softer clay column beneath from vertical erosion. Over geological time, wind and water have sculpted the surrounding terrain into a complex system of badlands, plateaus, and ravines. It remains the most photographed landmark in the 41,845-hectare protected park. Due to the rapid rate of natural erosion, the column is fragile and its eventual collapse is inevitable. Visitors are restricted to designated paths to prevent further degradation of the fragile soil structure.
