Overview

Bujdosók Lépcsője, locally known as the Outlaws' Step, is a strenuous hiking trail consisting of 464 basalt stone steps leading up the Badacsony hill in Hungary. The path traverses the characteristic basalt organ pipes of the volcanic massif, a remnant of Pannonian volcanic activity. The trail culminates at the Ranolder Cross, a large iron crucifix positioned on the cliff edge. It was constructed as a commemorative monument for those who sought refuge in the mountain's caves during periods of historical oppression. The route offers direct passage through dense deciduous forest and geological formations unique to the Balaton Uplands National Park. The elevation gain provides panoramic views over Lake Balaton and the surrounding volcanic buttes.

Photo spot

The observation platform directly beneath the Ranolder Cross offers an unobstructed view of the volcanic landscape and Lake Balaton.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy hiking boots with good grip as the basalt stones can be slippery when wet.

Carry significantly more water than you expect to need, especially during summer climbs.

Use trekking poles if you have knee sensitivities, as the descent is as taxing as the ascent.

What to avoid

Do not attempt this hike in heavy rain or winter ice, as the stone steps become treacherous.

Etiquette

Stay strictly on the marked trail to protect the fragile volcanic soil and local flora.
