Overview

The Castle of Segura de la Sierra is a 12th-century Almohad fortress situated at the highest point of the town, 1,200 meters above sea level. It served as a critical defensive bastion for the Order of Santiago during the Reconquista. The site is notable for its well-preserved triple-walled enclosure and a distinctive keep featuring a barrel-vaulted cistern. Visitors can access the battlements to view the surrounding Sierra de Segura mountain range. Archaeological evidence indicates the site has been inhabited since the Iberian and Roman periods. The castle underwent significant restoration in the 21st century to stabilize its structural integrity. It remains one of the few remaining examples of military fortifications in the region with an intact internal layout.
