Overview

The Zalaszántói Sztupa is one of the largest Buddhist stupas in Europe, standing 30 meters high and 24 meters in diameter. It was inaugurated in 1992 by the 14th Dalai Lama. The structure is built atop the Kovácsi-hegy hill within the Balaton Uplands. It houses original relics of Buddha, including a bone fragment. The stupa is painted white, symbolizing the purity of the mind. Surrounding the base are prayer wheels that visitors are invited to spin. The facility includes a meditation room and a nearby gift shop. It serves as a center for the Hungarian Buddhist community and is located within a protected forest area. The site is accessible via a short hike from the designated parking area at the base of the hill.
