Overview

Syggrou Forest is a 95-hectare protected woodland estate situated on the border of Marousi and Kifissia. It serves as a rare urban oasis characterized by its extensive pine forest and Mediterranean flora. The estate was bequeathed to the Agricultural University of Athens by Iphigenia Syggrou in 1921 for educational and experimental purposes. It remains a managed site featuring a network of dirt trails suitable for hiking, trail running, and mountain biking. The grounds house a distinct 19th-century Neo-Gothic mansion designed by Ernst Ziller. Visitors also find an 18th-century Orthodox church, Agios Andreas, built in a unique Byzantine style. The area functions as a research facility, prioritizing environmental conservation alongside recreational use.
