Overview

The Big Obukhov Bridge is the only cable-stayed bridge spanning the Neva River in Saint Petersburg. It serves as a critical link in the city's Ring Road (KAD) system, connecting the Nevsky and Nevsky districts. The structure consists of two parallel bridges built in two stages; the first stage opened in 2004, and the second was completed in 2007. It is one of the highest bridges in the region, featuring a central span clearance designed to accommodate large cargo vessels. Unlike many other bridges in the city center, this structure does not feature a drawbridge mechanism, allowing for uninterrupted vehicle traffic year-round. Its design utilizes a high-pylon cable-stayed system to support the heavy transit loads of the motorway. The bridge serves as a major logistical artery for freight transport moving around the outskirts of the metropolitan area.

Insider tips

View the bridge from the riverbanks during sunset for optimal lighting on the cable structures.

Avoid driving during peak morning and evening rush hours to experience the bridge as a functional landmark rather than a traffic bottleneck.

Observe the bridge from the Neva river water level via boat tours for a better perspective of its vertical scale.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to walk across the main transit lanes of the bridge, as it is a high-speed motorway with no pedestrian sidewalks.
