Overview

Ragnit Castle is a 14th-century Teutonic Ordensburg located in Neman, Kaliningrad Oblast. Constructed between 1397 and 1409 under the direction of Grand Master Konrad von Wallenrode, it replaced an earlier wooden fortification. The castle was built as a defensive stronghold on the border with Lithuania, utilizing characteristic red brick Gothic architecture. Throughout its history, it served as a residence for the Teutonic Knights, a prison, and later a courthouse during the Prussian era. It suffered significant damage during World War II and subsequent Soviet-era industrial use. In recent years, private restoration efforts have stabilized parts of the structure, including the gate tower and sections of the wall. Visitors can now access the inner courtyard and segments of the preserved masonry. The site is currently maintained by the 'Donskoye' tourism and cultural project.

What to avoid

Do not climb or lean on unreinforced wall sections or scaffolding used for stabilization work.

Good to know

The site is generally accessible, but access to internal chambers may be restricted during ongoing masonry restoration.
