Overview

Cascade d’Aitone is a series of natural rock pools and waterfalls located in the heart of the Aitone Forest near Évisa, Corsica. The site is characterized by the crystalline waters of the Aitone river flowing through granite rock formations. It is surrounded by one of the largest laricio pine forests on the island. The terrain features a natural swimming area formed by carved granite basins. The area remains a popular destination for freshwater swimming during the summer months. Access is provided via a short hiking trail that leads directly from the main road through the forest canopy. The water temperature is notoriously cold even during peak summer heat.

Photo spot

The elevated rock ledge overlooking the largest middle pool provides the best vantage for capturing the cascades and surrounding forest.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy water shoes with grip, as the granite surfaces underwater are extremely slippery.

Bring a waterproof bag to protect electronics, as the trail requires walking near active water.

Visit during the shoulder seasons to avoid the significant crowds that occupy the pools in July and August.

What to avoid

Avoid jumping into the pools without first checking the water depth, as the basin topography changes after heavy rainfall.

Good to know

The site is prone to access restrictions during high forest fire risk periods in summer; check local prefecture reports.

Etiquette

Pack out all trash to maintain the protected forest environment; do not use chemical soaps in the pools.
