Overview

Rize Fortress is a two-part medieval fortification system located on a hill overlooking the Black Sea city of Rize. The structure consists of an Inner Castle dating back to the Genoese period and a Lower Castle that extends toward the city center. It was constructed during the reign of Emperor Justinian in the 6th century and later reinforced by the Trebizond Empire. The site features stone walls and remnants of vaulted chambers accessible via narrow internal stairways. Its elevated position provides an unobstructed vantage point over the Rize harbor and the surrounding tea plantations. Extensive restoration projects in the early 21st century have stabilized the crumbling battlements for public access. The site is integrated into a managed landscape park featuring footpaths and seating areas.

Insider tips

Wear shoes with good grip, as the original stone stairs and wall surfaces can be slippery.

Visit the onsite tea garden located within the fortress grounds for a local beverage with a view.

Explore the perimeter wall early in the day to avoid the intense midday sun, as shade is limited.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to climb the exterior of the walls or enter fenced-off restoration zones for safety reasons.
