Doddabetta is the fourth highest peak in South India.
The name translates from the Badaga language as 'Big Mountain'.
The peak is part of a complex of ten distinct summits in the immediate Nilgiri range.
The area experiences a significant temperature drop compared to Ooty town due to its high altitude.
The forests surrounding the peak are recognized for high levels of endemism in plant species.
Doddabetta Peak is the highest point in the Nilgiris at an elevation of 2,637 meters. Located within the Doddabetta Reserved Forest, the peak serves as the junction of the Western and Eastern Ghats. The summit features a telescope house operated by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation, providing magnified views of the surrounding valley. The area is characterized by shola-grassland ecosystems. On clear days, the peak offers visibility extending to the Coimbatore plains and distant Mysore plateau. It is a prominent feature of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. The terrain is accessible via a paved road that leads near the summit, followed by a short walk.
The raised viewing platform near the telescope house offers the widest panoramic vista.
Bring a windbreaker or warm layer, as temperatures are consistently lower than at base level.
Visit during the early morning hours to minimize haze and maximize long-distance visibility.
Carry binoculars if you plan to avoid crowds at the public telescope house.
Do not attempt to feed the wild monkeys present in the parking area, as they can be aggressive.
Maintain silence near the forest trails; do not litter, as this is a protected wildlife zone.
