Overview

Zolochiv Castle is a 17th-century fortification located in the Lviv region, featuring a unique blend of defensive ramparts and a residential Renaissance-style palace. The site includes the Grand Palace and the Chinese Palace, the latter being a rare example of Eastern-influenced architecture in Ukraine. The castle was constructed in 1634 by Jakub Sobieski, the father of King Jan III Sobieski. During the 19th and 20th centuries, the site served various roles, including a prison for the Gestapo, NKVD, and MGB. Today, it operates as a museum-reserve under the Lviv National Art Gallery. Its interiors have been restored to reflect the lifestyle of 17th-century European nobility. The grounds contain a collection of mysterious stone carvings featuring encrypted 14th-century inscriptions. The site is a key component of the 'Golden Horseshoe of Lviv' tourist route.
