Overview

The Leutascher Geisterklamm is a dramatic limestone gorge carved by the Leutascher Ache river, situated on the border between Austria and Germany. The site features three distinct trails: the 3,000-meter-long Klammgeistweg, the 1,900-meter-long Wasserfallsteig leading to a 23-meter-high waterfall, and the 2,000-meter-long Koboldpfad. Visitors traverse the canyon via high-altitude steel walkways bolted directly into the rock face, suspended up to 75 meters above the rushing water. The geological formation dates back to the Würm glaciation period. Educational stations along the routes explain the local flora, fauna, and geological history. The canyon serves as a natural boundary between the Mittenwald area in Bavaria and the Leutasch valley in Tyrol.

Insider tips

Carry a light rain jacket, as the mist from the waterfall can dampen clothing even on sunny days.

Bring binoculars to observe the nesting sites of local raptors on the inaccessible rock walls.

Ensure your footwear has a high-grip rubber sole, as the metal walkways can become slick when wet.

What to avoid

Do not attempt the catwalks if you have a fear of heights, as the vertical drop to the water is significant and open.

Good to know

Closed during winter months and periods of heavy snow; typically reopens in May depending on thaw conditions.

Etiquette

Sturdy, closed-toe hiking footwear is strictly required; pets must be kept on a short leash due to narrow pathways.
