Overview

Tsarimaligrad is a fully reconstructed 4th-century late Roman fortress located on St. Spas Hill above the village of Belchin. Built during the reign of Emperor Valens, the site served as a strategic military outpost and refuge for the local population. Archaeological excavations revealed fortified walls with four corner towers and an inner ecclesiastical complex. The site features an interactive museum displaying coins, jewelry, and pottery discovered during restoration. Access to the hilltop plateau is facilitated by a funicular railway. The complex includes a reconstructed Christian basilica and residential quarters showcasing early Byzantine building techniques. It serves as both an archaeological park and an educational center for Bulgarian history.
