Interesting facts
1

The lake's white sediment is formed by hydromagnesite, which is a rare mineral associated with planetary surface conditions similar to those on Mars.

2

Lake Salda contains active microbialites, which are structures built by communities of microorganisms that provide insight into the origins of life on Earth.

3

NASA scientists studied the lake to understand how to search for potential biosignatures in the Jezero Crater on Mars.

4

The water is highly alkaline, with a pH level typically around 9.

5

It is considered one of the cleanest lakes in Turkey due to its isolation and protected status.

6

The lake basin was formed by a tectonic depression, making it a deep, bowl-shaped crater lake.

Overview

Lake Salda is a deep crater lake located in the Yeşilova district of Burdur province, Türkiye, renowned for its distinct white hydromagnesite-rich shoreline. The lake's unique mineral composition results in a turquoise water color and white sediment that chemically resembles features found in the Jezero Crater on Mars. Reaching depths of up to 184 meters, it is currently one of the deepest freshwater lakes in Türkiye. The area is a protected Special Environmental Protection Zone to preserve its fragile stromatolite formations. Visitors are restricted from entering the water in the primary protected areas, specifically the White Islands (Beyaz Adalar) section, to prevent ecological damage. The lake is fed by groundwater and small streams, maintaining its endorheic status without an outflow. The surrounding landscape consists of a combination of forest and steppe vegetation.

Insider tips

Bring polarized sunglasses to manage the intense glare reflecting off the white, sand-like hydromagnesite shore.

Stay on designated wooden walkways to avoid damaging the sensitive mineral crust.

Visit during weekdays to avoid peak crowds from regional tourism traffic.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to take sand or rocks as souvenirs, as this is illegal and harms the protected ecosystem; avoid swimming in cordoned-off protected sections.

Etiquette

Walking on the white sand in protected zones is strictly prohibited to prevent the destruction of unique mineral formations; follow all signage regarding restricted water access.
