Overview

Fukuchiyama Castle is a hilltop fortress originally constructed in 1579 by Akechi Mitsuhide during his conquest of the Tanba region. The current main keep is a 1986 concrete reconstruction that functions as a local history museum. It features the distinctive 'no-zura-zumi' stone wall technique, where stones are piled without carving or finishing. The site is noted for its unique 'To-shigami-mon' gate, which was originally the gate of a former castle lord's residence. Visitors can ascend to the top floor of the keep for panoramic views of the Yura River and the surrounding Fukuchiyama basin. The castle grounds contain the 'Toyoiwa-no-ido' well, said to be the deepest in Japan at approximately 50 meters. The museum exhibits artifacts related to the Akechi clan and the castle's architectural evolution. It serves as a focal point for local historical preservation efforts in northern Kyoto Prefecture.
