Interesting facts
1

Mt. Daisen is a stratovolcano that has been inactive for approximately 30,000 years.

2

The mountain is considered a sacred site and was historically restricted to monks and ascetic practitioners until the Meiji era.

3

The wooden boardwalk near the summit was constructed specifically to halt the degradation of the mountain's volcanic soil caused by heavy foot traffic.

4

The north face of Mt. Daisen features a massive vertical rock wall known as the Kabe-heki, which is one of the largest in Japan.

5

Misen Peak is technically a sub-peak, as the true summit of Mt. Daisen (Kengamine) is currently off-limits to hikers due to dangerous ridge erosion.

Overview

Misen Peak is the highest point of Mt. Daisen in Tottori Prefecture, standing at 1,709 meters as the tallest mountain in the Chugoku region. The summit is accessed primarily via a well-maintained wooden boardwalk designed to protect the fragile alpine vegetation from soil erosion. Hikers reach the top through the Daisen-ji Temple trail, which features a long stone staircase and forest paths. The peak offers panoramic views of the Sea of Japan, the Yumigahama Peninsula, and the Shimane Peninsula. Rare alpine plants, including the Daisen-kyaraboku (Japanese yew), grow in the surrounding protected areas. The summit area is significantly colder than the base, often retaining snow well into the spring season.

Insider tips

Bring layers, as the wind speed and temperature at the summit differ significantly from the mountain base.

Use trekking poles to assist with the high volume of stairs on the initial ascent.

Stay strictly on the wooden boardwalks to prevent further erosion of the alpine flora.

What to avoid

Attempting to hike to Kengamine Peak, as the ridge is unstable and strictly prohibited.

Good to know

Trails may be closed or restricted during winter months due to heavy snow accumulation and avalanche risks.

Etiquette

Wear sturdy hiking boots, avoid leaving any trash, and refrain from stepping off designated trails.
