Overview

Paithalmala View Point is a high-altitude hill station located at an elevation of approximately 1,372 meters in the Western Ghats of Kerala. It features a rugged trekking path that leads to one of the highest peaks in the Kannur district. The landscape consists of expansive meadows, shola forests, and steep rocky outcrops that provide a vantage point over the Coorg forests and the Arabian Sea coastline in clear weather. The peak is known for its endemic flora and shifting mist, which frequently envelops the summit. The site is a significant biodiversity hotspot within the Kerala-Karnataka border region. Visitors reach the main viewpoint via a moderate uphill climb starting from the base station at Kappimala.

Insider tips

Wear high-grip trekking shoes, as the trails become slippery and muddy during the monsoon season.

Carry a windbreaker or light jacket, as the summit is subject to strong winds and rapid temperature drops.

Bring sufficient drinking water, as there are no shops or vendors once you begin the ascent from the base.

What to avoid

Attempting the climb during heavy monsoon rainfall (June to August), when the paths become treacherous and visibility is near zero.

Good to know

Access may be restricted by local forest authorities during extreme weather conditions or high forest fire risk periods.

Etiquette

Avoid littering on the trekking trails to protect the fragile grassland ecosystem; refrain from playing loud music.
