Overview

The Esztergom Basilica is the largest church and the tallest building in Hungary, serving as the seat of the Catholic Church in the country. It is built in the Neoclassical style, featuring a massive dome that reaches a height of 100 meters. The structure stands on Castle Hill, overlooking the Danube River and the border between Hungary and Slovakia. It houses the largest altarpiece in the world painted on a single canvas, titled 'The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary'. The basilica's treasury contains one of the most significant collections of ecclesiastical gold and silver artifacts in Central Europe. The crypt beneath the church functions as the burial site for prominent Hungarian archbishops and primates. It occupies the site of the first royal cathedral of Hungary, originally commissioned by Saint Stephen in the 11th century. The current building was constructed between 1822 and 1869.
