Overview

Phaselis is an ancient Lycian harbor city situated on a peninsula between the Taurus Mountains and the Mediterranean Sea. The site features three distinct harbors: the North, protected, and military harbors, reflecting its former strategic importance as a trade center. A central aqueduct, preserved in significant sections, once provided the city's water supply. The main thoroughfare is a paved street, roughly 20 meters wide, connecting the harbor to the Hadrian's Gate. Visitors can explore the remains of a Roman theater built into the hillside, which retains its seating capacity and stage architecture. A nearby necropolis contains various sarcophagi dating back to the Hellenistic and Roman periods. The site is uniquely integrated with a forest of pine and cedar trees that provide natural shade. Archaeological excavations have identified a central plaza, public baths, and an agora adjacent to the harbor. The site is currently maintained as an open-air archaeological park under the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
