Overview

Merlion Park is the waterfront home to Singapore's national icon, a 8.6-meter tall statue featuring a lion's head on a fish's body. The site also hosts a smaller, two-meter tall Merlion cub statue nearby. Water is continuously ejected from the primary statue's mouth into the Marina Bay. The park sits at the mouth of the Singapore River. The site was redeveloped to offer direct waterfront views of the Marina Bay Sands resort and the ArtScience Museum. The current location is a relocation from its original site at the Esplanade Bridge, where it stood from 1972 until 2002.

Insider tips

Visit during the early morning to beat the heavy crowds and humidity.

Bring an umbrella or raincoat if you plan to stand directly in front of the statue, as winds often spray water onto the viewing platform.

Check the official weather forecast, as the park is entirely outdoors with limited natural shade.

What to avoid

Avoid taking taxis directly to the park gate, as traffic congestion is frequent; walking from the nearby commercial district is usually faster.
