Overview

The East Tower, known as the Kilakku Gopuram, serves as one of the four primary entrance gateways to the Meenakshi Amman Temple complex in Madurai. Standing at 49 meters, this nine-storied gopuram is covered in an extensive array of stucco sculptures depicting deities, mythical figures, and scenes from Hindu epics. It serves as a major ceremonial entrance for devotees arriving from the East Avani Moola Street side. The tower is architecturally aligned with the main sanctums of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar. Visitors pass through this gateway to enter the inner prakarams of the temple, which is a centerpiece of Dravidian architecture. It remains a central site for the annual Chithirai Festival processions.

Insider tips

Remove footwear at the designated stalls outside the entrance before proceeding toward the inner sanctums.

Look up at the gopuram from the street level before entering to see the intricate detail of the sculptures that are otherwise difficult to view once you are directly beneath the gateway.

Keep cameras in bags, as photography is strictly prohibited once you pass the main gateway into the inner temple courtyards.

What to avoid

Do not accept unsolicited 'guided' tours from individuals loitering near the entrance; use only official guides.

Good to know

The temple may temporarily close its inner sanctums to the public during daily ritual ceremonies and major festival events.

Etiquette

Modest clothing is mandatory; shoulders and legs must be fully covered. Remove shoes before entering. Maintain a quiet, respectful demeanor.
