Overview

Angeles National Forest spans over 700,000 acres of the San Gabriel Mountains, rising from 1,200 to 10,064 feet at the summit of Mount San Antonio. It serves as the primary watershed for the Los Angeles Basin, containing over 500 miles of non-motorized trails. The terrain features a transition from chaparral and oak woodlands at lower elevations to subalpine conifer forests. The forest encompasses several designated wilderness areas, including the Sheep Mountain and San Gabriel wildernesses. Visitors can access various campgrounds, picnic sites, and scenic overlooks via the Angeles Crest Highway. The area supports diverse wildlife, including black bears, mountain lions, and the endangered bighorn sheep. It is managed by the United States Forest Service as part of the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument.

Insider tips

Always check current fire danger levels and forest closure orders on the official website before heading out.

Bring significantly more water than you think you need, as the steep terrain and high sun exposure lead to rapid dehydration.

Download offline maps, as cellular service is non-existent throughout the vast majority of the forest canyons.

What to avoid

Attempting to hike remote, unmaintained trails without proper navigation tools or underestimating the extreme temperature fluctuations between base and peak.

Good to know

Road closures are common during winter due to snow or during fire season; check the status of Angeles Crest Highway before departure.

Etiquette

Practice Leave No Trace principles; pack out all trash, stay on designated trails, and adhere strictly to all fire restrictions.
