Geologically, the area is characterized by the Weald anticline, featuring distinct north and south-facing escarpments. The park contains over 3,300 kilometers of rights of way, including footpaths, bridleways, and restricted byways. It encompasses significant archaeological sites, including Neolithic burial mounds and Iron Age hillforts. The ecosystem supports unique chalk grassland flora, such as the round-headed rampion, which is the county flower of Sussex. Designated an International Dark Sky Reserve in 2016, the park provides some of the darkest night skies in South East England. The landscape is primarily managed as working farmland, interspersed with ancient woodland and managed heathland.
