Overview

The Arch of the Sergii is a late 1st-century BC Roman triumphal arch located at the entrance to the old town of Pula. It was commissioned by Salvia Postuma Sergia to honor three male members of the Sergii family who held high-ranking political and military positions. The structure is built from limestone and features a single opening flanked by Corinthian columns. Its eastern facade is relatively plain, suggesting it was originally attached to a city gate. The western facade is highly decorative, featuring intricate friezes of vine scrolls, cupids, and military equipment. The arch stands at the beginning of Pula's main pedestrian street, Ulica Sergijevaca. It marks the historical transition between the ancient Roman city and the surrounding suburbs. Despite its age, the arch remains one of the best-preserved examples of Roman triumphal architecture in Croatia.
