Overview

Tustan is a unique archaeological and natural monument consisting of massive sandstone rock formations that served as a medieval defensive fortress. The site features preserved rock carvings and grooves that reveal the original wooden construction of the 9th to 16th-century fortress. An on-site museum displays artifacts recovered from the site, including weapons, jewelry, and household items. The fortress was part of a strategic defensive chain protecting the Kyivan Rus' western borders. Visitors walk through designated trails atop and around the rocks, which reach heights of up to 50 meters. The surrounding area is part of the Skolivski Beskydy National Nature Park. The site is actively maintained by a historical and cultural reserve that manages preservation and research efforts. Archeological findings suggest the site transitioned from a pagan sanctuary to a custom point and finally a fortress. The reserve hosts annual historical reenactment festivals.

Insider tips

Wear hiking boots with aggressive tread as the sandstone paths can be slippery when damp.

Bring a windbreaker, as wind speeds increase significantly once you reach the top of the rock massifs.

Start your visit at the museum to understand the layout before attempting the climb.

What to avoid

Attempting to climb the steep rock faces outside of marked staircases and wooden walkways, which is both dangerous and prohibited.

Good to know

Open year-round, though some pathways may be restricted during heavy snow or icing conditions in winter.

Etiquette

Do not climb on restricted, non-marked areas of the rocks to preserve the petroglyphs; stay on established paths.
